Flat Classroom students explore Citizen Journalism

But Really, The Tsunami Changed Everything! This was the message from Richard Roth, Senior Associate Dean for Journalism at Northwestern University, Education City Qatar, when he spoke to students of the Flat Classroom Project at Qatar Academy this week about the impact of citizen journalism. He went on to share his experiences in journalism and how the traditional role of the media, as providers of all news, has evolved into the scenario now where everyday citizens are able to contribute and provide immediacy and eye-witness accounts of global events. One mile-stone in this development was the tsunami in 2004 where ‘reporters’ were people on the scene taking photos and videos and sending them around the world via online means. The use of micro-blogging mediums such as Twitter has also contributed to the availability of information and news from ordinary citizens.

Students had the opportunity to discuss ideas with Richard and ask questions during the session. In true ‘flat classroom’ style one of the project partners, Hawkesdale P12 School from Victoria Australia attended the session via a video Skype link-up. Issues such as how to verify online information, how to protect privacy and how to be an effective citizen journalist and award digital citizen using emerging technologies were raised.
Flat Classroom Project teacher Ray Jones and facilitator Jill Boulanger, organized the session with Richard in order to provide a keynote for the current project. Students globally will have the opportunity to watch the event asynchronously and interact via a discussion forum. More information about the session, including a podcast of Richard’s presentation can be found on the project wiki http://flatclassroom09-2.flatclassroomproject.org/Keynote

The Flat Classroom Project was co-founded by Julie Lindsay, Head of Information Technology and E-Learning at Qatar Academy and Vicki Davis, IT Director Westwood School, Camilla, Georgia, USA and is based on researching and applying the flatteners found in Thomas Friedman’s book ‘The World is Flat’. In 3 years over 1500 students in 20+ countries have collaborated globally in flat classroom projects. With the support of sponsorship from HSBC Bank, Qatar Academy hosted the inaugural Flat Classroom Conference in January 2009. More information about current and future projects can be found at http://flatclassroomproject.org
