Overview of "Judging"

The aim of judging is to come up with awards for multimedia artifacts. This is to be done using the prepared rubrics in combination with an online form (in order to identify outright 'winners').

The Project in a Nutshell

How would you go about making a video with a team of people you have never met before, you may never meet face to face and using the power of the Internet? The Flat Classroom Project will include over 200 students from 10 classrooms around the world.

Basically, students work in groups from different schools and different countries to produce content on a wiki page from which they create an individual digital artefact (video), including out-sourced video or multimedia from another student, which they embed into their team wikipage. The students have to use loads of different tools and develop amazing skills: file compression, editing, sending files, working in different time zones.....
The Flat Classroom Project is a global collaborative project founded by Vicki Davis (Westwood Schools, USA) and Julie Lindsay (Qatar Academy, Qatar) in 2006.

It uses Web 2.0 tools to facilitate communication, interaction and collaboration between students and teachers from all participating classrooms. The topics studied and discussed are real-world scenarios based on 'The World is Flat' by Thomas Friedman. One of the main goals of the project is to 'flatten' or lower the classroom walls so that instead of each class working in isolation, 2 or more classes are joined virtually to become one large classroom. How does the judging work?

  • All Videos will be posted on the Master List with each video having a distinct number.
  • The master list is locked at a date to be specified (Sometime around middle of June, 2009) -- only videos that are turned in on time on the master list will be judged.
  • We have 2 judges per Topic with about 8-10 videos per pair of judges expected.
  • Criteria is based on the rubrics for Design and Technical Quality as well as Synthesis and Construction of Ideas
  • All judging teams are asked to fill in the online survey and determine their choices by June 20, 2009.
  • Review all videos first and choose your top 3.
  • Complete one survey form for each of these 3 videos only, there is no need to fill in a survey for every video.
  • Each judge has the option to nominate a personal favorite for an award (included in the survey.) This is called your "Judges Choice" award.
  • Results are tallied and winners are announced (Date tbc is the Awards Ceremony)

Meta-Judging

The meta-judge for this project is Torsten Otto, a flat classroom teacher from Germany. Torsten led a class through a Flat Classroom Project earlier this year. As meta-judge he will be deciding the top 3 multimedia responses from all classrooms.

Who is qualified to judge?

We encourage educators interested in learning to assess higher order thinking skills to be involved. We want people who can give feedback on the methodologies employed to move towards improving our assessment of such projects.
